Gears of War 2: Dom and Maria scene?

Why did Dom kill Maria? i mean i know she was all messed up and stuff because of what The Locus do to people, but why did he have to kill her? Why not just leave her there, I mean look at Marcus's face when the gun shot goes off he was probably thinking "wtf?!?!?"
