Where did the Israelites originally come from? What there 1st, Palestine or Israel?

I just always wondered about this. I know after WW2, many jewish prisoners were relocating to now present day Isreal. That's as far as my knowledge goes on this. Also where was Canaan, as talked about in the Bible?
